In 1967, aged 28, Rosemary married Fred West and the marriage lasted seven years, during which time Fred became abusive. Rosemary gave birth to a son in 1973. Fred died in 1994 while serving a life sentence for murder at HMP Wymott prison in Lancashire.

During the trial it emerged that Rosemary had been sexually abused by her older brother David while she was young. In 1997 David was convicted of murdering 10 women between 1967 and 1987 and sentenced to life imprisonment. Rosemary would have been excluded from the trial if she had lived because she had been deemed unfit to give evidence due to mental health problems including depression and paranoia , but her death meant that evidence gained from her could be used against her husband Fred.

After Fred's death, Rosemary visited her son at his home in Wakefield where she was arrested for his murder on 6 June 2007.
